The following applications are provided on the smart ID card :

  • Non-immigration applications
        - e-Cert

        - Leisure Link Self-service Kiosk

The inclusion of non-immigration applications is optional. Cardholders have a free choice to decide whether to include the applications in their smart ID card or not.

Immigration Applications
The smart ID card
provides proof of identity in a more secure form. With basic personal data and templates of two thumbprints stored in the chip, Hong Kong permanent residents (except those under the age of 11), Hong Kong residents holding Document of Identity for Visa Purposes, people who have the right to land or are on unconditional stay in Hong Kong, and non-permanent residents who have been issued with a notification label can use their smart ID cards for automated immigration clearance through control points installed with e-channels. Other than their smart ID cards, Hong Kong residents must bring along with them their valid travel documents when travelling. For details, please click here.

e-Cert Application
Cardholders can also store in their smart ID card a personal e-Cert issued by Hongkong Post Certification Authority. The e-Cert enables cardholders to perform electronic transactions securely over the Internet. For details, please click here.

Library Card Application
Cardholders can choose to use their smart ID card as a library card. To enable the library card function on the smart ID card, cardholders have to perform a simple registration process at one of the public libraries. With the library card function enabled, cardholders can enjoy the various services provided at public libraries using their smart ID card. For details, please click here.

Leisure Link Self-service Kiosk Application
Public can choose to use their smart ID cards to book any leisure facilities of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) territory-wide or enrol in leisure programmes organised by the department via the “Self-service Kiosk” installed at 47 LCSD venues. This one-stop service is just that simple and easy! For details, please click here.

Benefits

To the cardholders, the smart ID card will give them the convenience of automated immigration clearance on their arrival and departure, instant access to public library facilities, secure electronic transactions over the Internet, and other high quality government services planned for the future.

To the community, the e-Cert application on smart ID card will encourage the development of more online applications and thus foster e-commerce in Hong Kong.
